Case Study #1: Auckland Physio & The Collective – Owners Mark, Katy & Helen

What were your key challenges that first led you to work with Co-Pilot?
1) We started the 2020 year on the back-foot financially and then Covid hit so it was a sink or swim situation for us. We had to make some big decisions around our business that would give us the best chance of survival and also potential to thrive again…. and also convincing the other shareholders that this was the right thing to do!

2) Company structure and shareholding issues- since Covid, our differing shareholdings for each director has become an issue.

3) Brand and marketing- since closing a clinic and refining our offering we have also needed to refresh our brand to make it more simplistic and to the point. Our old message doesn’t quite fit any more.

What suggested solutions and/or actions have been offered to meet those challenges?
1) Richard suggested that we look at projections and talk through different scenarios openly. Richard gave me the confidence to approach the other shareholders knowing that this was a good decision for the business. Prior to this, the other shareholders were not interested. He reviewed spreadsheets, discussed scenarios and offered great advice on how to approach this in a fair way. Richard also set up our ‘must haves’ that we refer back to on a monthly basis to ensure we stay on target.

2) Richard started the conversation and lead a meeting with all 3 director/shareholders. He then suggested an action plan and advice around how to value a business and getting a valuation. He was a great sounding board and really considered how everyone was feeling.

3) Richards expertise in this field really shone through. Richard really thought about the users experience and drilled through all our comms to patients and gave advice on everything he thought could do with editing/improving. No stone was un-turned. In terms of our branding – Richard lead multiple meetings and gave advice on what he thought conveyed us as a business and what our strengths were- always ensuring that this was reflective of our values and what we want to portray. His approach to the branding (and everything in fact) was really well thought out and in line with how we want to operate as a business.

Have you seen tangible progress and success to meet those challenges?
Yes! Significant progress

1) Closed a clinic and we are now a lot more profitable, have a more connected team and are a lot less stressed about finances.

2) We are in the process of levelling out shareholding amounts (to make them all even) so that this is not an issue moving forwards

3) Almost completed branding and messaging- rolling out next month- very excited to get this work completed and have the confidence that it will have the “Rich tick’ 😉

Has working with Co-Pilot helped evolve the way that you now operate and approach your business (and even life in general)?
Yes, defintely! One thing that really struck me with Richard is how thoughtful he is with everyone involved… even staff he hasn’t met. His advice comes from not only a business perspective but also really thinking about the impact of this on a personal level for everyone involved. He has made us re-think why we are in business and exactly what we want out of it which is something that was missing.

Are there any specific comments or words you might have about working with Co-Pilot that describe the difference it has made for you in having an independent sounding board working alongside you and your colleagues?
Thank you so much Richard. We have really loved working with you. You have given us the confidence to move our business forward in a positive way where everyone is feeling valued and heard as well as us actually making money 😉 …. we now have a better framework when reviewing our performance and will continue to refer back to this to ensure we stay on track!

Case Study #2: Strategic Spaces. Owner, Mike Grainger.

What were your key challenges that first led you to work with Co-Pilot?
I was looking for some business planning expertise and need to provide an operational structure that provided more efficiency across the week. Also assistance with marketing initiatives and compiling brochures etc

What suggested solutions and/or actions have been offered to meet those challenges?
Providing and setting up a system called Trello. The system separates functions for working on the business and lists etc for day to day tasks.

Have you seen tangible progress and success in order to meet those challenges?
Yes, the Trello system is helping provide more day to day structure. Also having more standard brochures and generic email templates has made Business Development much easier.

Has working with Co-Pilot helped evolve the way that you now operate and approach your business (and even life in general)?
Being a self employed consultant can at times be lonely and its all up to you to keep the motivation and energy going. Having the Trello system to look back on allows you to review the tasks that need to be achieved to keep the weekly momentum.

Are there any specific comments or words you might have about working with Co-Pilot that describe the difference it has made for you in having an independent sounding board working alongside you and your colleagues?
Richard is a fantastic listener and takes the time to fully understand the business model or pain point that needs work and then sets about providing advice/guidance in a relaxed and professional approach.
